Our 'on demand' webinar provides an overview on emotion coaching. Not sure if this training is for you? Here’s the basics.
Who:
Emotion coaching is an approach that can be used by anyone! It works at a whole class level and also an individual level. Whilst emotion coaching training is often accessed by teachers, teaching assistants and other school staff, it’s an approach that can be used by parents and carers as well.
What:
Emotion coaching follows a 5 step sequence that starts with becoming aware of and tuned into a range of emotions, through to connecting with the child, listening to what the child has to say, naming emotions and finally, problem-solving. Through emotion coaching, it is hoped that the child increases their emotional literacy skills as well as their ability to co-regulate alongside an adult.
Where:
Emotion coaching is considered to be an ‘in the moment’ teaching strategy. This means that it can be applied in any context; be that in the classroom, on the playground or in the supermarket!
When:
Emotion coaching can be used to explore and work through moments where a child experiences intense emotions that they might be struggling to understand. It can also be used to discuss social situations and to introduce problem-solving during these. There are moments where emotion coaching is not appropriate however, and these are moments where a child has become highly dysregulated and we might consider them to have ‘flipped their lid’. Check out Dr Dan Siegel’s ‘hand model’ for more information on this.
